This week, the US Senate approved a resolution under the Congressional Review Act to roll-back the broadband consumer privacy rules adopted in October by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which would have gone into effect later this year.

The US House of Representatives approved a similar measure later in the week.

The broadband consumer privacy rules were intended to protect internet users from certain methods of unauthorized collection and utilization of sensitive data regarding their online activity.

Last week’s appointment by the Trump administration of White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Rob Joyce, formerly of the National Security Agency (NSA), as announced by Homeland Security Advisor Tom Bossert, should represent an important step forward.

The DCIA joins with other technology interests in urging the White House also to fill the role of Federal Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) as soon as possible.

Following up on last week’s report, the Trump administration confirmed this week that it will require federal agencies to abide by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cybersecurity framework and, on a timely basis, report back on their implementation of its recommendations.

Trump’s larger priorities on cybersecurity include controlling and protecting federal networks and their data, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and securing the nation generally from cyber-threats; and his shorter term goals include curtailing botnets and fostering private sector participation in cyber-initiatives – regardless of politics.

The DCIA is encouraged by the updated draft of the Trump administration cybersecurity executive order now being reviewed by industry leaders, and we are hopeful that the order will be issued shortly.

The order is expected to hold federal managers accountable for vulnerabilities in their technology systems and require adoption of the series of cybersecurity best practices developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The DCIA commends the US House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space and Technology this week for approving the “NIST Cybersecurity Framework, Assessment, and Auditing Act of 2017.”

Congressman Ralph Abraham (R-LA) introduced the bill mandating that government agencies adopt the cybersecurity framework developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
